Event ‘Dance on the Edge’ at BAC.

There was a group of 60 or so in the audience today which is pretty good!

Dav and I opened the event in “silence” as Neil Roach Dir of Ausdance said, meaning no music. It went pretty good. I felt slightly preoccupied with the floor being a bit slippery.

I liked our beginning, very casual standing next to each other. It was funny because Hanna Semler the director of BAC did an introduction to the event whilst we were standing behind her (already in performance). Once she sat down she looked at us gesturing that we could start dancing because her speeach was done. I enjoyed watching her having a mini stress before I sparked off some moves.

She liked it though so that was nice.

Holly and I did an improvised duett with Dav playing music on his Iphone.

It was the first time Holly and I performed together. I enjoyed it. We havn’t got a practice so we experienced some “off tuned” dancing. But we did pretty good.

The Forum after was led by Neil. There were interesting thoughts and comments from Lee Christofis on dance performed in various forms such as improvisation, set choreographed dance work etc. He spoke about the value of physical movement and expression without the “meaning” as the objective.
He encouraged audience to watch dance for all that it is, negotiation, investigation, expression, interpretation, communication…etc. Lee is a former dance critic and now dance curator at the National Library of Australia. As a “new” Canberran, I had not heard of him before. I would like to meet him again.

The announcement was made that this event Dance on the Edge, will take place again. If it’s once a year or twice I don’t know, but I think it is a great way to involve the community in our work. The platform independent dance act can use this event to physically display our artistic practice.
